The community was named for the “winding” layout of streets designed to afford maximum privacy. It’s main thoroughfare “Jens Jenson” is named after a noted landscape designer. Jenson’s famous work for the Ford Motor Co. and the Ford families private estates served as a model for The Windings. On these properties, Jenson emphasized creative landscape designs that reflect the unique natural characteristics of the region and provide retreat for the families that used them. The designs take advantage of naturally occurring features and mirror the range of natural habitats found in the area. Jenson carefully tailored his designs to preserve the rich mosaic of existing woodland, savanna, conifer, swamp, and open farmland, while providing a private rustic retreat for the family. Although he didn’t design The Windings subdivision, he certainly influenced its layout. For additional info. on Jenson’s work see www.michiganalsa/jensjenson.htm .
